The Pinot Noir or Nero grape is considered one of the noblest red grape worldwide (the only possible comparison is with the Nebbiolo) responsible for one of the most sought-after wines in the world and is another variety that belongs to the so called "international" grapes of French origin, but widely cultivated around the world.
The homeland of the grape is Burgundy, it is known to be very pretentious and risky grape to grow, because of its thin skin, it is a challenge for every wine maker with variable results from vintage to vintage and area to area. It is extremely susceptible to damaging temperature fluctuations while on the vine and easily ruining the grapes before they are ripe and that’s if it doesn’t get harmed from diseases due to its compact clusters. Pinot Noir feels much better in cooler climates and often does admirably results on vineyards which are not receiving abundant sunshine throughout the year.
Pinot noir is also a very significant player in Champagne and classic method sparkling wines in general, bringing depth, backbone and adds complexity to blends with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, to produce some of the world's finest sparkling wines.
Countries and cool climate regions, where the grape thrives except France, are Germany, Austria, Trentino Alto Adige, Lombardy, New Zealand, Oregon, Russian River Valley, Switzerland and many more.
