WINE REGION
Neuchatel
Country Switzerland

Neuchâtel is one of the oldest wine-growing region found in the French-speaking south-west part of Switzerland, called the Three Lakes region. Most of the vineyards are located on the banks of Lake Neuchâtel and account for the largest part of the production in this region. The region is most famous for its Pinot Noir which is the only one allowed grape for quality wines, and well for the white Chasselas grape variety. The climate of the Neuchâtel region is strongly influenced by the nearby lakes with its gentle hills the region possesses a moderate and airy climate in which autumnal fogs are quite common. The soil types are predominantly calcareous with limestone and granite. Despite the great Pinot Noir and Chasselas, the region offers quite elegant specialities such as a few sparkling wines and some award-winning Chardonnays as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. A small and rear region which is becoming more and more sought after outside Switzerland.
