Michigan is a cool wine-growing region located between the Lake Michigan and the Huron lake of The United States on the border with Canada. The region is specialising on the cool climate grape varieties, and one of the signature wines which is produced there is the Ice wine. Michigan is the fourth largest wine-growing region, where viticulture has been practised since the 17th Century, and by the end of the 1800s, there was a growing wine industry in the state. The climate is cool but the temperatures throughout the year are tempered by the lakes surrounding the region. At the end of the spring and early summer, cool breezes from the cold lake are influencing the vineyards, and in early fall, the vegetation season is extended by warm air from the lakes, which have been storing heat over the summer. During the winter the lakes are keeping the vines from devastating freezes. The grapes which are mostly planted include Riesling which has fast become the most important noble grape, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Gamay, Pinot Noir and Vidal. There are five wine-growing areas which are specialising more or less on different grape varieties including Leelanau Peninsula, Old Mission Peninsula, Tip of the Mitt, Lake Michigan Shore and Fennville. The ice wines from Riesling and Vidal grapes are marvellous, honey-like nectar which is rare to catch. Overall the region has great potential and is becoming increasingly popular on the international wine scene.
