WINE REGION
Kremstal
Country Austria

Kremstal is a small and historic wine-growing region located in the northeastern part of Austria alongside the river Krems and neighbour of the Wachau region. Grapes have been grown since the early 10th century here and have great winemaking traditions, especially the monks from the Benedictine Order’s magisterial Göttweig Abbey, founded in 1072. Kremstal is known for spicy Grüner Veltliner and elegant, mineral-driven Rieslings, which in addition to the refreshing classic styles, are released to the market as robust Reserve category wines. The region has a continental climate with warm summers, cold winters, and remarkable day-night temperature difference, which allows the grapes to develop rich aromatics while preserving crisp acidity. It is as well positively influenced by the Pannonian climate blowing warm winds over the region. The soil types are predominantly clays and limestone on the hills and down in the foothills and the river are more loess. The Grüner Veltliner and the Riesling are thriving on both kinds of soil. Besides the two white wine stars of Kremstal, it produces wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt with outstanding quality and depth with some of them already drawing international attention. Kremstal region is classified DAC since 2007 for the Grüner Veltliner and the Riesling, which have been celebrated global scale.
