Kartli is a historical wine-growing region located in the central-east part of Georgia. It is one of the notable regions well-known for or its classic European style and high-quality sparkling wines. Big part of the plantings are found alongside the rivers Mtkvari and its tributaries, Liakhvi and Ksani, at around 450-700 meters above sea level. The climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters influenced by the nearby rivers. The sparkling wines are made usually from Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Aligoté and Pinot Noir. The white wines are made from Rkatsiteli grapes and are characterized by its light straw colour, aromas of apricots and fine complexity. Most of the red wines are typically made from Saperavi grapes, which are characterized by its noteworthy red colour, spicy aromas and pleasantly velvety taste. The Kartli region is still not so popular, but it is gaining some international attention.
