WINE REGION
Galilee
Country Israel

Galilee is an old wine-growing region in the most northern part of Israel. The name of the region comes from the Lake Galilee, which brings associations with the Bible, but nowadays steadily is becoming known as a wine region. The story tells that on the wedding at Cana, Jesus turns water into wine, as it is widely thought to have its origins here. The region is by far the smallest in terms of planted vineyard area but gives birth to the most notable wines in Israel. It is divided into two sectors including Upper and Lower Galilee. The upper Galilee, near the Lebanese border, is hilly with altitudes that rise to 1,000 meters, with volcanic, gravel and the famous terra rossa soils. The Elevations in the lower sector near Mount Tabor range from 200 to 400 meters, and the soils vary between volcanic and limestone. Big part of the grape varieties are with French origin like the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Chardonnay, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Carignan. A fine expression of the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir grapes are the sparkling wines of the region, as well as oaked Chardonnays, and of course powerful blends of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Galilee region is one of the most interesting and up-coming ones from the Middle- east and it is gaining more popularity very steadily.
