WINE REGION
Graubunden
Country Switzerland

Graubünden is a wine-growing region is positioned far east in Switzerland on the border with Austria. The region is one of the oldest in the country as the Romans have enjoyed the wine from the Bündner Herrschaft (Graubünden’s Rhine Valley). Graubünden is famous for its Pinot Noir which takes around 80% of the plantings in the region. The grape has been brought from Burgundy of France around 1630 and has found perfect climate and soil type compositions to produce some of the most distinguished expressions of the grape. The climate is the warmest wine-growing region in German-speaking Switzerland. The soils in the area are a composite of schist and gneiss, loosely structured and warmed by the bright mountain sunshine, and almost all vineyards are planted on the right bank of the river as this offers a westerly aspect and easier slopes to work. The climate is the warmest wine-growing region in German-speaking Switzerland. The Pinot Noir grape is the dominant grape in Graubünden but the Chardonnay and the other burgundy varietals Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are thriving as well. Exceptional and sought after wine region called the Swiss Burgundy.
