WINE REGION
Oregon
Country USA

Oregon is a young rising star wine region located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States already compared with Burgundy of France for the outstanding Pinot Noir expressions. It was not until the late 1960s when Oregon has earned its internationally recognised status for the classical Pinot giving deep red cherry colour with aromas of black cherries, stewed strawberries and an earthy edge, capable of long cellaring. The majority of the vineyards are located in the north in the famous Willamette Valley, where the 4,000 m high Cascade Mountains protect them from the continental, hot influences. The western part of the region is popular for the iron and clay-rich, reddish-coloured soil of the "Red Hills of Dundee" near McMinnville, Newberg and Yamhill. The other notable American Viticultural Area AVAs are located in the warmer southern part of the valley, as well as in the Tualatin Valley, Umpqua Valley and along the Columbia River. Oregon's climate is marked by mild winters and cool, humid and long summers which are very similar to Burgundy and Bordeaux at similar latitudes, making it very suitable for all grape varieties that cannot endure too much heat. Several French Burgundy producers have already made investments in Oregon. The region is divided from 21 AVAs and each one of them has something special to offer to the World.
