Eger is one of the most important wine regions in Hungary located in the central north part of the country best known for its red Egri Bikavér wine, popularly known as "Bull's Blood". The popularity was gained by a bad reputation in the past 50 years when the name was misused to make cheap wines, but it is slowly regaining its title as Hungary’s most elegant red wine region. The soils of Eger are a volcanic rhyolite, while some areas are covered with limestone and vines are planted on the hills surrounding the town of Eger, which is one of the coldest and driest climates in Hungary. Other popular grape varieties are Olaszrizling, Kékfrankos and the international Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Currently, it is becoming more common to find light and crisp whites and light reds alongside the big, blended reds of the past.
