Hampshire is a wine-growing wine region in the south part of England located west of Sussex known for world-class sparkling wine made with the Champagne grapes which have overtaken the large plantings of Seyval Blanc. It is well-known as well for the first commercial plantings made in 1952 by Major Gen. Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones, a diplomat in Paris and wine-lover, with friends at prestigious Pol Roger Champagne House which have pushed him to take the winegrower's leap of faith, and by the late 1960s his still wines were acquiring awards and today Sir Guy's vineyard prospers, running down the south-facing slopes of Hampshire. The climate is dryer from the rest of the country and a bit warmer helping the early ripening grapes like Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Seyval Blanc and Chardonnay to mature. At the moment the wines from Hampshire are raising awareness of the acclaimed wine region that's attracting even the French.
