Lombardy or Lombardia in Italian is the biggest region and is known for being the most industrial area of the country and it has a varied landscape from large plains to the South, Pianura Padana, to hills and mountains in the north. Surprisingly, while this is one of the largest and more important Italian regions, there are very few well known wines from this region, the most important is the Franciacorta, a classic method sparkling wine grown in a small area near the D’Iseo lake that rivals the champagne, followed by the Sforzato della Valtellina, same style as the more famous Amarone della Valpolicella, and the Oltrepo Pavese, another classic method sparkling wine.
The region is home to several appellations, from DOC to DOCG to IGT and due to its varied climate, it produces vary styles of wine, from Amarone type in the northern area of the region to the lighter styles in the southern region up to a lambusco, the Lambrusco Mantovano DOC appellation.
