WINE REGION
Wurttemberg
Country Germany

Württemberg is the fourth biggest wine region of Germany situated between Lake Constance and the Tauber valley below Rothenburg in the southern part of the country. The region is mostly known for its red wines as the total plantings of red grape varieties are close to 70%. Württemberg has a continental climate with hot summers, sunny autumns, frosty winters and together with favourable microclimate along the Neckar river and the shell limestone and Keuper soils are creating perfect conditions for quality red wine production. The region is divided between six areas with 17 large vineyards and 207 individual vineyards, where the most famous of all is located in the heart of the region called Württembergisches Unterland. It has many steep-slope vineyards, and often the sites are terraced and can only be hand-harvested. Of course, the Riesling is the most important white grape in Württemberg, followed by the red grapes Dornfelder, Pinot Meunier (Müllerrebe), Pinot Noir and not so largely planted Müller-Thurgau and Kerner. The Schiller rosé wine is something of a speciality of the region, which unlike other rosé wines, is produced from a mixture of red and white grapes that are put together before fermentation. Sadly the region's wines are rarely seen outside the country as it deserves more international attention.
