Elgin is a small wine region part of the Cape South Coast wine area of South Africa becoming increasingly popular for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The region has a unique location being surrounded from each side by mountains between on 250-400 m above sea level. The climate is cool and the proximity to the South Atlantic Ocean means lower average temperatures over summer and fresh early-morning fogs. The topographic and the climate characteristics are moderating factors which makes slower, more-gradual ripening of the grapes and thus more-balanced wines with great depth and complexity of flavour. Other grapes which are planted on Elgin are Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Riesling. Elgin wine region has lots of potentials to develop itself as a leading wine area in South Africa.
