WINE REGION
Thermenregion
Country Austria

Thermenregion is a wine-growing region positioned in northeastern Austria just south from Vienna famous for its thermal springs and the unique local white grape varieties Zierfandler and Rotgipfler. The region was formed in 1985 by joining the formerly independent wine-growing districts of Gumpoldskirchen and Bad Vöslau known for the thermal baths since ancient times. Thermenregion hosts the oldest winery in Austria, the Freigut Thallern near Gumpoldskirchen founded in 1141 by the Cistercians monks. The vineyards benefit from the Pannonian climate expressing itself in hot summers and dry autumns with constant air currents enabling the grapes to dry quickly after dew or rainfall in autumn. The predominant soil types are loam, gravel and sands with high limestone content and substantial remains of shells and other nautical life. The red grape varieties such as Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Sankt Laurent are thriving here producing remarkable wines worth long ageing as well as a modern expression s of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. An amazing region which needs more international attention.
