Gruner Veltliner
COLOR

Grüner Veltliner is a light-skinned white grape variety which is autochthonous for Austria, and it is a crossing which most probably derives from a Traminer and the second parent remains unconfirmed, but it is thought to be the old variety discovered in St. Georgen in Burgenland. It is the most important and planted white wine grape in the country achieved internationally known status because of its versatility. The most excellent Austrian expressions of the Grüner Veltliner come from vineyards alongside the Danube River in Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal. The classical characteristics of the grapes reminding of aromas of white flowers, celery and taste of white pepper, followed by flavours of apple, grapefruit, peach and spice, together with clean mineral notes. While Austria is the motherland of Grüner Veltliner, there are large plantings of the grape across Central Europe, especially in Slovenia and some in northern Italy. In the New World it has a small, but a promising appearance in New Zealand and the USA.
