Zweigelt
COLOR

Zweigelt is a dark-skinned red wine grape variety with roots in Austria and it is created in the 1920s by Professor Fritz Zweigelt, a crossing between Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent. The Zweigelt grape is the most widespread red wine variety in Austria and can be found in suitable sites in all wine-producing regions. The best expressions of the grape are coming from Burgenland and Carnuntum regions, where it develops characteristics of slightly violet-reddish coloured wines with soft tannins and fine tones of Morello cherry. The Zweigelt grapes are very often used in a blend with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the parental Blaufränkisch. It is also used for the production of various sweet wines in the Neusiedlersee region in Austria, like ice wine and strohwein where the grapes are dried for more concentration. Zweigelt can be found in Hungary, Slovakia and Germany under the name Rotburger.
