Mavrud
COLOR

Mavrud is a dark-skinned red wine grape variety, one of the oldest and considered the most valuable and high-quality from the native varieties. It is distributed mainly in the Thracian Valley region of southern Bulgaria. It does not tolerate low temperatures and it is susceptible to frost if the temperature falls below -16 °C in the winter. It is not attacked by grey rot, but is susceptible to fungal infections and requires a full range of protective measures against them. The wines produced from the Mavrud variety have a rich ruby colour with a lot of tannins and acidity and a specific, very pleasant aroma full of blackberries and ripe mulberries. The best expressions of the grape are obtained with oak maturation, developing a powerful, complex aroma and dense, harmonious taste. Outside Bulgaria, the Mavrud can be found in some parts of Greece.
