Thrace is an ancient wine-growing region located in the north-east part of Greece. The region's wines have been praised by Homer in the 8th century and today it is shared between Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. The wines which are coming from the Thrace region are not big in quantity but high in quality, as some of the most famed wines are coming from here. The best wines are made from Greece's red wine star grape Xinomavro, as well as from the international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Syrah and the native Bulgarian grape variety of Mavrud called here Mavroudi. Thrace has a humid and warm climate with high rainfall, particularly during the summer with the Rodopi Mountain Range protecting the vineyards against the cold northern winds. Its proximity to the northern Aegean Sea moderates the low winter temperatures and guarantees cooler ones in the summertime. Thrace has four main wine-growing areas including Avdira, Maroneia, Ismaros and Evros each with its distinctive microclimate and topography. The wines of Thrace are proven to be powerful and age-worthy with increasing popularity outside the country.
