Assyrtiko
COLOR

Assyrtiko is an old light-skinned white wine grape variety indigenous to the volcanic Santorini island in the Aegean Sea of Greece. It is probably the most famous white grape of Greece and the most versatile made in a multitude of styles, from fresh, minerally white wines to rich, nutty dessert wines known as Vinsanto. The vines planted on the Santorini island are some of the oldest vines in the country and can reach more than 70 years. Wines made from then old vines are producing Assyrtico which is complex and with long ageing capabilities. The characteristics of the grape then vinified dry are yellow-gold in colour with mineral, pear, apple and citrus blossom aromas and flavours, as some expressions are fermented in barrel for more depth and structure of the wine. It is as well-used with other grape varieties like Athiri to form blends and for the production of the Retsina wine. The Assyrtiko can be found all over Greece but the best results are coming from Santorini, Macedonia, Attica, Peloponnese, Epirus and Thrace. Outside Greece, it can be found in Clare Valley of Australia.
