WINE REGION
Macedonia
Country Greece

Macedonia is a large wine-growing region located in the north part of Greece. Macedonia has a great and very old cultural and wine history dating back to 5th Century BC. The region is famous for its white international varietal wines from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, and the indigenous red Xinomavro grape variety, which produces firm tannins and big flavours, and the best expressions are among Greece's most-sought-after reds. The climate is a mixture between Mediterranean and continental with hot summers and colder winters. The topography is very various as the soil types but the predominant landscape is flat or hilly with rich alluvial and rocky soils. Macedonia is divided into six wine-growing areas including Drama, Kavala, Halkidiki, Goumenissa, Naoussa and Amynteo each with distinctive climatic differences. The region boasts probably the best red wines in the country around Goumenissa and Naoussa made from the flagship grape Xinomavro and in the Halkidiki area from the Limnio grape. Nowadays, Macedonia has developed into one of Greece's most extensive and highly regarded wine regions.
