Albariño is a light green-skinned grape variety indigenous to Galicia on the Atlantic coast of Spain. It is largely planted as well in Portugal's Vinho Verde regions Monção and Melgaço under the name Alvarinho and Cainho Branco. The wines produced are very dry and aromatic, with flavours of white peach, apricot, melon, pineapple, mango and honey, keeping good natural acidity and minerality. The most notable expressions of the grape are coming from Galicia's Rías Baixas region near the Atlantic where it gives light white wines or in a more powerful style, with oak or lees ageing which adds more texture and richness. As well the place transfers its marine characteristic and sometimes showing itself as slight saline, which makes Albariño a perfect food wine. Outside of Spain and Portugal has gained popularity in California and New Zealand.
