WINE REGION
Montevideo
Country Uruguay

Montevideo is a small wine-growing region and the capital of Uruguay, and it is one of the few cities almost surrounded by vineyards. Montevideo is home to some of the oldest vineyards in the country and giving birth to one of the most distinguished wines of Uruguay. The king grape is the Tannat found its second home in these beautiful lands. The climate of the region is very similar to those in Bordeaux of France. It is mild and warm influenced by the South Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is relatively low with altitude, not more than 75 meters above sea level. Montevideo has two main wine-growing areas, one is around the city's northern side, limited by the evocatively named Ciudad de la Costa (City of the Coast) and Ciudad de la Plata (City of Silver) in the east and west respectively. The most planted grapes besides the Tannat are Pinot Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, with Albariño beginning to gain a foothold, as well as red wine grape varieties including Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The region produces high quality white and red wines, and it is one of the most sought after outside the country.
