WINE REGION
Tokaj
Country Hungary

The Tokaj wine region is the oldest and the most famous in Hungary located in the north-east part of the country on the Slovakian border, lying on 300 extinct volcanos. The fame of the region is coming from the sweet luscious wines produced for centuries which were part of many royal tables. It is around the 11th century when Tokaj was first mentioned to produce sweet nectar-like wines, which have become the historic and cultural heritage of Hungary. The climate is quite hot and protected by the Carpathian mountain range. The soil type is a very special composition between volcanic, clay and loess which gives the minerality to the wine. The two rivers Bodrog and Tisza run nearby, creating a damp, foggy microclimate that is ideal for the development of noble rot, or botrytis, which gives the delicious wines of Tokaj their unique rich flavour. The region has 24 small districts each with its slight differences. The sweet Tokaj can be made only from 6 allowed grapes Furmint, Hárslevelű, Muscat, Zéta, Kabar, Kövérszőlő from which the first three are the main with a lead of the Furmint. The Tokaj region was officially declared a UNESCO site in 2002 World Heritage. Named by the French King Louis XIV Wine of Kings - King of Wine. The wine region of Tokaj is a historical wine region located in northeastern Hungary and its most famous region, one of the seven larger Hungarian wine regions, and Europe’s first classified wine region, going back to the end of the 17th century. The region is made of 28 villages and takes its name after the village of Tokaj, it has been declared a World Heritage Site in 2002 under the name Tokaj Wine Region Historic Cultural Landscape and the Tokaji aszú wine, one of the wines produced in the area, is the world's oldest botrytised wine. The soil is made mainly of clay, covering volcanic rock rich in iron and lime located between two rivers, the Tisza and the Bodrog, that create a special microclimate ideal for botrytised wines.
