WINE REGION
Shandong
Country China

Shandong is one of the most important wine-growing region located between Beijing and Shanghai. It is the largest region in China, and it is the birthplace of the big part of the most prominent wines of the country. It is as well home of the oldest and largest winery in China with around 40% of the total production of the Chinese wine. The first vine plantings are dating back to the early 19th century. Most of the vineyards are to be found on the outskirts of urban areas. The famous city of Yantai on the northern coast of the peninsula has become China's wine capital. The most significant grape varieties of Shandong are Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère (Cabernet Gernischt), Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Riesling and Chardonnay. The climate of the region is maritime as it is located on a peninsula with abundant sunlight and has a cool and refreshing climate. The region is relatively flat with coastal terrain, although the middle of the province the topography is more hilly with the highest peak of 1500 m above sea level. Shandong is the modern face of the Chinese wine and it attracts international wine investors from Bordeaux of France and many other countries. The region holds the future of Chinese wine.
