The island of Sardinia, called Sardegna in Italian, is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and only slightly smaller than Sicily.

Sardinia's terroir is made of a combination of hills and plains, coastal regions and inland areas, an ideal climate and landscape, still viticulture, is relatively small compared to the rest of Italy: Sardinia has the lowest level of wine production per hectare and this is reflected in the fact that it only has one DOCG wine, the Vermentino di Gallura. Only in the last decade vine growers and wineries have started pushing for quality wines that are slowly gaining international recognition.

Sardinia native grapes are Cannonau (Grenache everywhere else), Carignano, Malvasia and Vermentino. Recently international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are being grown and used in blends. Other, little knows grapes includes Torbato, Semidano, Niederra, Nuragus, Monica and Nasco. Sardinia has one DOCG appellation and several DOCs, the most important are Cannonau di Sardegna and Vermentino di Sardegna.
