WINE REGION
Rueda
Country Spain

Rueda is a small wine region located on the Duero river in Spain in the heart of Castilla y León wine-growing area Northwest of Madrid. It is named after the city Rad and known for its dry, aromatic white wines made predominantly from the Verdejo grape variety, with small quantities of Viura and Sauvignon Blanc. The region has a long history dating back to Roman times, but modern history begins in 1980 when it is recognised as a DO region. To be called Rueda Blanco the wine must consist of at least 50% Verdejo and if the grape is stated on the label must be at least 85%. The climate is continental with hot and dry summers and cold long winters with limestone soil consisting mainly of loamy alluvial soil mixed with gravel terraces which are helping the grapes to achieve fruitiness and fresh acidity. Other important grape varieties for Rueda wine region are the Sauvignon Blanc and Palomino where the latest has played the main role in the production of white and fortified wines with oxidised style similar to those of Jerez. It is also, produced Rueda Espumoso a sparkling wine, made in the traditional method with nine months in the bottle, ageing on lees. The region has great potential, and that has been seen from major Rioja based wineries which have invested and made some splendid wines reached international recognition.
