Quebec is one of the largest wine regions in Canada well-known for the sweet and rare icewine, the sparkling and the fortified wines. The history of the viticulture in Quebec is very old dating back to the 17th century, but the modern wine industry is quite young started to develop itself at the beginning of the 1980s. The weather conditions are extremely challenging for wine-growing, because of the cold continental climate and only the early-ripening grape varieties like Riesling and some hybrids like Vidal, Seyval Blanc are giving good results. A speciality of the region is the ice cider (cidre de glacé)made from frozen apples using the same technique used for the production of the grape icewine. Most of the vineyards in Quebec wine region are located around Montreal and St Lawrence River and are divided between 10 sub-regions. Due to global warming in the past decade, the wine production is going up but still, almost all wine is consumed within the country.
