WINE REGION
Provence
Country France

Provence is a very old wine region situated in southeast France on the Mediterranean sea coast, and it is well known for its rich and mineral rosé, but it has full-bodied reds, along with light and fresh white wines and the classic Mediterranean hot climate, which makes it perfect location for vacation. Provence have also storms in spring and autumn, regularly causing difficult and variable harvests. The region has many soil types and this reflects in the various grape varieties.

Provence has ten major appellations and the mains, for production of rosé, are Côtes de Provence as the largest of all and using the usual grape varieties Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Tibouren and Cabernet Sauvignon. The rosés here are excellent, full of fruit, soft and aromatic.

Next one is Côteaux-d’Aix-en-Provence with most of the rosés being light, fruity and easy-drinking using mainly Grenache with some Cinsault and Counoise. Bandol is another appellation famous mostly for rosé and red wine with main grape Mourvèdre providing tannin and body and it is commonly blended with Grenache to produce powerful, well-structured red wines. Here the rosés are made from Cinsault, Grenache and Mouvedre and a small quantity of white wine is produced from Clairette and Bourboulenc.

The appellation of Bellet has built quite a reputation for red, white and rosé wines. The reds are muscular, elegant and well-structured at the same time and very fine examples of rosé wines. The history of Ballet dates back to the ancient Greeks of Marseilles which have planted the grapes there. Cassis is a very small appellation for rich and full-bodied white wines from Ugni Blanc, Clairette and Marsanne. Palette is an extremely tiny appellation, literary one producer the Château Simone making award-winning red and white wines with excellent ageing potential.
