WINE REGION
Paarl
Country South Africa

Paarl is one of the most famous wine regions situated 60 km western from Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape wine area. The name Paarl means "pearl" relating to the granite mountain at the foot of the city "Paarl Rock". The region boasts some of the country's finest red and white blended wines and for the most of the 20th century was the centre part of the South African wine industry. The climate is quite warm with moderately hot summers cooled by Atlantic breezes towards harvest season. Most of the plantings are found on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain and in the valley of the Berg River, where they find perfect conditions for wine-growing. The most planted grapes in the Paarl wine region are the Pinotage with most of them followed by the Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
