Navarra wine region has very old wine-growing traditions located between the Pyrenees and the Ebro River Valley with main city Pamplona in Spain. The famous pilgrimage route "Camino de Santiago" (to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia) ran through the city and the pilgrims were enjoying the wines of the region. Navarra is mainly famous for its fruit-driven roses made from Garnacha. The last decade is starting to attract awareness for its high-quality red wines made mainly from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties after years of being dominated by its southern neighbour Rioja. The region is separated into five sub-areas Tierra Estelba and Valdizarbe in the north, Baja Montaña and Ribera Alta north of the Ebro River and in the centre and the largest area, Ribera Baja. Navarra has granted DO status since 1933 making it one of the oldest recognised wine region of Spain. The climate is very versatile as the landscape which spread across more than 100 kilometres. Navarra is very near to the Bay of Biscay in the north which temperate the climate together with the Ebro River plain to the south. The soil composition of the region is very fertile mainly made from calcareous and limestone with variable fine stone texture. Navarra is a region which is making strong come back and awaits better recognition outside the country.
