Nagy-Somló is a very small wine region in the north-west part of Hungary near to the Lake Balaton famous for the full-bodied dry white wines. Traditionally the white wines are barrel-aged with balanced acidity, considerable minerality and oxidative notes worthy of long ageing in the cellar. The climate is warm with long growing season and frequent winds with basalt-rich soils particularly widespread on the upper slopes which gives a distinctive mineral quality to many of the wines. The dominant white grape varieties are Furmint, Olaszrizling, Sárfehér, Hárslevelű and Juhfark. Particularly distinctive is the white high acidity and aromatics, Jufrak which translates as sheep’s tail, named after the long, thin shape of the grape bunches.
