Marche is a hilly and largely mountainous central Italian region and is a region that is somewhat varied in climate due to its location with the Apennine Mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east.

Marche is a relatively big wine producer with plenty of wines, mainly whites, with Verdicchio their most famous white wine but in recent years it is experiencing a surge in the production of red wines. The Marche region has 15 DOC and 4 DOCG appellations with the IGT Marche being the biggest of all, with some of the best wines bottled as IGT.

If the Verdicchio grape is the grape and the wine the region is often associated with, with the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica, Trebbiano is the second widely planted white grape. Verdicchio in recent year has proved to be a very versatile and ageing suited grape and thanks to its lively acidity, it is also used in the production of sparkling wine, classic method. Other white grapes worth mentioning are Bianchello (also known as Biancame) Pecorino and Passerina.

Among the red grape varieties, the most planted are Montepulciano and Sangiovese, and the native Lacrima di Morro D’Alba and Vernaccia Nera. In recent year, several wine makers have started using international grapes, from Syrah to Merlot, to produce their top wines.
