Liguria, also known as the Italian Riviera, is a small coastal region stretching 250km along the Mediterranean Sea characterised by steep slopes which make incredibly difficult to grow grapes, very labour intensive, where it is all done manually, for that reason Ligurian wines, are little known outside the region.

Although there are several grape varieties grown in the region, Liguria is mainly known for its white wines, Pigato, a native grape, and Vermentino characterised by aroma reminiscent of the sea, as well as an underlying minerality. Amongst the red grape variety, the main grape is Rossese that produces the DOC Rossese di Dolceacqua. Liguria due to its small size and the presence of sea and mountains, doesn’t have much land available for viticulture making Liguria the second smallest wine producing Italian region, but Ligurian wines are truly spectacular, mainly from very small, artisan wineries that grow their grapes in stunning terraces overlooking the sea.
