Country

Lebanon is very ancient and small Middle East wine production country, it lies on the Mediterranean Sea surrounded by Caucuses to the north, Mesopotamia to the east and Southern Palestine to the west, considered to be one of the areas in which the earliest wines were made around 3000BC. The Lebanese climate is Mediterranean, with long, dry and usually very hot summers and cooler, more humid winters, with snow in some areas. But everything is relative.

The modern wine industry goes back to the 19th century, and the French have an immense influence on it as the country was an old colony of France. Most of the plantings are located in the picturesque Bekaa Valley, named after the city Bekaa where are produced high-quality wines with a distinctive character. Bekaa Valley is situated between the two mountains called Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains.

The original plantings were mostly from the Cinsault grape variety and later added the classical southern French grapes - Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. White wines are usually made from Ugni Blanc, Clairette and Chardonnay. There are indigenous grapes like the white rich Obaideh and Merwah grape and the red Sabbaghieh, all of them used in very small quantities as blending grapes.

There are two wineries which are emblematic and very important for the development of the Lebanese wine internationally - Château Ksara and Château Musar. Both are the pioneers and the founders of the wine-producing industry in Lebanon, shinning with Bordeaux styled, remarkable wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon and with a sense of Terroir. At the moment there are not more than 30 wineries, altogether in the country.
