WINE REGION
Lazio
Country Italy

The Latium or Lazio region is found in the centre of Italy and is also one of the most important regions, not least because its capital is Rome and this is where the government reside. The region is close between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennines giving the region a varied climate and microclimates. The region's reputation is mainly based on its white wines, the most famous wine of is a white wine called Frascati, which was described as “the golden wine” by the Romans. Cesanese and Castelli romani are also widely made.

Traditionally these wines were fat, rounded, made in ”abboccato” style and suited to the typical, rich traditional cuisine. Nowadays, the styles are lighter, drier and crisper, however they are still made to be drunk young, characterized by high acidity that makes them an ideal accompaniment to the local cuisine that includes bucatini all’amatriciana, saltimbocca alla romana and the porchetta, one of if not the most famous Italian street foods but also suited for a more international palate.

And if white wines represent the biggest proportion of wine bottled, the main white grape varieties are Trebbiano, Malvasia di Candia and Malvasia Puntinata. However, in the last twenty years the region reputation for white wines, especially Frascati, has been seriously damaged by plenty of cheap, poor quality wine and as a consequence, many wineries have started promoting their red wines, especially the ones made with Cesanese used for the Cesanese del Piglio DOCG. Other red grape varieties planted in the region are Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Merlot and Nero Buono.
