Karnataka is a state, Bangalore is the capital, and wine region located in the south west of India. Despite its location, closer to the equator than what normally considered possible for viticulture, there are areas where wines are being made, mainly with sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. The state is now home to around 15 wineries, with some 2000 acres under vine.
Karnataka is located in the tropics - there is little difference in temperatures between summer and winter – and the seasons are marked by the South Asian Monsoon, a weather system that brings cool, moist air from the ocean to the region causing heavy rainfall. The rainy season, lasting from June to September, corresponds with the grapes growing season. Nonetheless, , growers are able to delay budburst with harvest falling in March.
One of the country's best-known wineries, Grover Vineyards, is based in the traditional silk-growing area surrounding the Nandi Hills.
