Franschhoek
Country South Africa

Franschhoek is a small very old and high-quality wine region situated in a valley 60 km east from Cape Town in the Western Cape wine area of South Africa. Franschhoek has been established by French settlers around the 1680s, expelled French men in the far corner of the country, that is what the name means Franschhoek - "French corner". The region is a home of one of the best and boutique wineries in the country famous with their powerful and complex wines from Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the production of Cap Classique - Sparkling wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and sweet wines. The region has a warm climate suitable for the big red wines which the region creates and the nearby mountains stop the cold oceans influences together with making shade for the vineyards on the south-facing hills. Today there are less than 50 wineries in Franschhoek which makes their wines very exclusive and rare.
