WINE REGION
Calabria
Country Italy

Calabria is the toe of the boot of Italy with Catanzaro as its capital city and it is surrounded by the stunning Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. Calabria is a rural region, but viticulture is relatively small, accounting to approximately 1% of the total Italian wine production.

Calabria landscape is varied with mountains and sea and very little and dispersed land in between making viticulture expensive with the consequence of the region being home to 12 DOC wines. However, the almost total wine production is bottled under the IGT appellation.

Calabria's oldest and most famous DOC wine appellation is the Ciro, in all its colours, from Bianco to Rosso, to Rosato and the Rosso Riserva. Amongst the grapes grown, Gaglioppo and Greco nero are the most planted. Both red grape varieties. For the white wine, the white grapes mainly planted and used are Greco Bianco, Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Bianca. Sicilian varieties, due the proximity of the two regions, such as the Nerello Mascalese and Ansonica are becoming increasingly popular.

In recent years, international varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have become part of the local landscape and are being used more and more in Calabrian wines.
