WINE REGION
Burgundy
Country France

Burgundy is situated to the East of central France and it is one of the world’s greatest and most prestigious wine regions. It is home to some of the most famous wine appellations in France, from the great white wine regions of Chablis, Pouilly-Fuissé, Puligny-Montrachet, and Meursault, to the iconic red wine communes of Vosne-Romanée, Gevry-Chambertin, Nuits-St-Georges, Vougeot, Volnay and Pommard. The flagship grapes are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which suits the cool climate terroir perfectly. The other two grape varieties that are important for the region are the much loved red grape Gamay, used for the production of Beaujolais and the white Aligoté. The climate of the Burgundy wine growing region is unique. And it is a mixture of continental, Mediterranean with oceanic influences, which gives the region’s wines a unique identity. There are always slight local variations which are playing a key role in the diversity and aromatic delicacy of the Burgundy's appellations. Burgundy is separated in distinct sub-regions, each with its particular style. Four of these are located at the central part of Burgundy between the towns of Dijon and Macôn. Beginning from Nord to south, the first is Côte d'Or consisted of the Côte de Nuits famous for its red wines and Côte de Beaune renowned for the white wines, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Macônnais. Of course, Chablis is part of Burgundy and it is located up North from Côte d'Or on limestone hills, famous for its extremely mineral, full of fossils Kimmeridgian and Portlandien soils. At the most southern point of Burgundy is situated the picturesque districts of Beaujolais. Burgundy has more than 100 different Appellations d’Origine Controlée AOC wines, indicating the place where the grapes have been grown. The region has a complex classification system, where the location of the vineyard is very important to understand the wine you are drinking. From the bottom the top the wines are classified as Regional, Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru - the more you go up, the better, more complex and more expensive the wines become.
