WINE REGION
Bierzo
Country Spain

Bierzo is a small historic, upcoming wine region located in the north-west of Castilla y Leon in Spain. The region sits on the path of El Camino de Santiago (St. James’s Way), the most famous of Christian pilgrimages and it dates back to Roman times. The modern history begins in 1989 when it is awarded DO status, and it is a very promising region and becoming very popular, because of the red Mencía grape once believed to be related to Cabernet Franc. The best expressions are delivering wines with pure fruit, superb structure, fine balance and versatility at the table with excellent value. Bierzo wine region has two sub-area called Bierzo Alto (high Bierzo), which is rich in minerals and mountainous terrain where terraced vineyards are sewn into the slopes, and Bierzo Bajo (low Bierzo), a wide and grassy plain. Most of the vineyards are at an altitude of 400 to 800 metres above sea level on heavy clayey soils, as well as quartz and slate in the mountainous area. Bierzo's temperate climate is quite mild and influenced by the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Other important grape varieties that are planted in Bierzo are Godello, Palomino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Syrah. Overall the region is a small gem which needs to be discovered.
