WINE REGION
Basilicata
Country Italy

Basilicata is a southern Italian region also known by the antic name of Lucania with the province of Potenza as its capital. There is only one other province in this region and it is the province of Matera.

When it comes to wine, Basilicata is largely unknown, the most known wine produced in this region is probably the Aglianico del Vulture, a different wine from the ones made with Aglianico grown in the neighbour Campania, though Malvasia, Primitivo and Montepulciano grapes are also grown here.

Basilicata despite having four DOCs appellation, bottles the almost totality of its wine under the IGT appellation with its total wine production accounting for less than 0.02% of the total Italian production, second only to Aosta Valley. Basilicata is bordered to the north by Campania and Puglia and to the south by Calabria with the Ionian Sea on one side and the Tyrrhenian Sea on the other with around 50% of its territory constituted of mountains, there isn’t much land for viticulture.

While Aglianico is the star grape, especially the Aglianico del Vulture, there are some very good examples of Moscato and Malvasia. Primitivo, Sangiovese and Montepulciano amongst the red grape varieties and the Bombino Nero produce good results. Basilicata has also recently started to grow and use international grapes variety such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that have had a positive impact on the wine reputation.
