WINE REGION
Aragatsotn
Country Armenia

Aragatsotn is an ancient wine-growing region situated in the western part of Armenia on the border with Turkey. Its history dates back to the 7th century. The region is named after the highest mountain in the country called Aragats 4,090 m, and the extinct volcano located there as well. It is a high altitude region with its lowest point of 950 meters above sea level. Almost half of the area is allocated to vineyards, and the climate is continental with hot and arid weather. The big part of the surface area of the region is composed of young volcanic lavas of various types and natures. Many water springs spurt from under lava topsoil and replenish creeks with the main artery of the region the river Kasakh. The most planted grape varieties are Areni, Muskat, Garandmak, Voskèak, Syrah and Chardonnay. The Aragatsotn's diversity is resulting in vast styles of wine as the best examples are powerful and long-lasting reds and fortified sweet wines. Unfortunately, the region's production is consumed within the country, and it is difficult to be found.
