WINE REGION
Apulia
Country Italy

Apulia, or Puglia in Italian, is often referred to as the heel or boot of Italy and it is one of the biggest Italian wine producing regions that can be divided into two areas, the north slightly hillier and the south almost entirely flat.

Until recently Puglia had a reputation for fruity, mass produced, alcoholic wine but in the last couple of decades - in a region with the perfect climate for viticulture where growing grapes is not a problem - due to consumer demand for better wines and to small, independent, long sighted, family run wineries, the region approach to wine has radically changed, it has gone from mass produced to high quality wines. Puglia still produce plenty of cheap wine, however, it has also become known for high quality and value for money wines.

The most famous and best known Apulian grapes are Negroamaro and Primitivo amongst the red and Verdeca amongst the white varieties, grapes widely planted. Other native grapes worth mentioning are Greco Bianco and Uva di Troia and more and more often international grapes are used in the local wines, especially IGT, with Chardonnay amongst the whites and Merlot amongst the red, the most used.
