WINE REGION
Abruzzo
Country Italy

Abruzzo is an Italian wine region located in the centre, on the Adriatic coast, south of Marche, east of Latium and Molise in the south. Abruzzo is home to the world famous Montepulciano D’Abruzzo - a DOC wine produced all over the region -, the Montepulciano D’Abruzzo Colline Teramane – the only DOCG wine, the white Trebbiano d’Abruzzo and the rose’ Cerasuolo D’Abruzzo made with montepulciano grapes. Recently, native grapes such as Pecorino, Passerina and Cococciola are seeing a renaissance.

Abruzzo’s viniculture was, until recently, characterised by big cooperatives where vine growers would sell the grapes producing average wines with very few exceptions. Abruzzo’s wines did not have a great reputation. In the last decade or so, plenty of individual, family run wineries, have been established and are now producing quality driven wines and improving the region’s image.

Abruzzo is one of the biggest Italian wine producing region with around 40,000 hectares of vines planted between the Adriatic sea to the east and the Apennine mountain range to the west providing the perfect conditions for grape growing thanks the abundance of sunshine, the generous rainfall and a variable climate, warm and dry on the coast, hot in summer and cold in winter inland.

The majority of vineyards are planted on the hilly areas with a small percentage along the coast with the most favourable conditions found in the Colline Teramane hills, in the province of Teramo.
