The grape Calabrese is best known as Nero d'Avola. The name “Calabrese” would suggest to origins in Calabria, in reality it is a native grape of Sicily. The grape Calabrese is present in various denominations in blends with other varieties; in purity it has the ability to give rise to wines of great structure and complexity, also suitable for long aging. The berry is black, medium, elliptical or oval with waxy skin of medium thickness, very resistant, bluish. The bunch is medium, conical, winged, often composed and medium compact with a large, orbicular, entire leaf. The grape Calabrese has a regular and consistent production. Vinified alone, the Calabrese gives structured wines, intense, harmonious and warm, with hints of plum and cherry, sometimes spicy.
