Athiri is an ancient light-skinned white grape variety native to the Aegean Islands wine region of Greece. It is believed that the exact origins of the grape are from the island of Santorini where it is often blended with Assyrtiko to form some of the best dry and sweet wines of Greece. When vinified by itself, it gives lightly aromatic, fresh and lemony wines that are medium-bodied with moderate alcohol and acidity. Athiri wines are not meant for long ageing, they should be enjoyed within 2-3 years of the vintage year. The other regions having large plantings of the grape are Crete, Rhodes, Samos and Macedonia. Outside Greece is nowhere to be found.
