Alfrocheiro is a dark-skinned red grape variety indigenous to the northern part of Portugal. It is most commonly found in Dão, Douro and Alentejo wine regions. The grape likes dry, warm regions, where they are protected from humid, disease-bearing air conditions. Alfrocheiro grape is an early-ripening, high-yielding grape often susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis, producing colourful red wines with fine tannins and aromas of blackberries, strawberries and cherries. The grape is often used as a blending companion for the Aragonez(Tempranillo) and Touriga Nacional grape varieties. It is as well to be found in Spain under the name of Baboso Negro.
