Undoubtedly one of the world's most famous and expensive wine, Bordeaux is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region, the name has also become a style of wine. Red Bordeaux or Claret as it is called in Great Britain is a blend, made mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely, Carménère. The majority of Bordeaux wines are the dry, medium and full bodied red that have made Bordeaux what it is.

Generally, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend in wines produced in the Médoc area and the rest of the left bank with a typical blend made of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. This is also called the "Bordeaux Blend". Merlot tends to predominate in the other right bank blends where the typical blend is 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

White Bordeaux is predominantly made from Sémillon, Sauvignon blanc, and Muscadelle grapes, ranging from dry white wines to the sweet and most important Sauternes made with grapes that have been affected by Botrytis, also known as noble rot.

The Bordeaux wine classification goes back to 1855 when the wines and chateaux were divided in five different classes: First Growth, Second Growth, Third Growth, Fourth and Fifth Growth. The finest and most expensive Bordeaux are the ones from the great châteaux of the Haut-Médoc and Saint-Émilion and Pomerol in the right bank.
