Aloxe-Corton is a small historical village and appellation located in the northern part of the Côte de Beaune sub-region in Burgundy. The appellation is mostly well-known for its red wines from Pinot Noir, but it also produces a small amount of exceptional white wines. Signs of viticulture has been noted as early as in the 696 AD, and later on, Emperor Charlemagne donated the upper part of the mountain (where the famous Corton vineyard is located) to the monks of Saint-Andoche Abbey in 775AD. In the middle of the 19th century due to the increasing fame of its wines, Corton was added to the name of the village Aloxe, like many other Burgundy communes.

Aloxe-Corton’s Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) dates back to 1938. It has 118 hectares under vine from which 35 hectares are Premier Cru vineyards. It shares three Grand Cru vineyards, which are located on the hill of Corton with the appellations of Pernand-Vergelesses (Corton-Charlemagne) and Ladoix-Serrigny (part or all of Corton-Pougets, Corton, Corton-Languettes). A specification is that there is 25 lieux-dits, a French toponymic term for a small geographical area, that may be used on wine labels of Corton wines. The biggest part of the Corton hill is located within Aloxe-Corton, as well as the sought after Le Charlemagne Grand Cru site, which is producing some of the best, rare and most distinctive white wines made from Chardonnay in Burgundy.

The climate is typical for Burgundy, which is continental with warm summers and cold winters. Aloxe-Corton enjoys a perfect wine-growing location in the face of the Corton hill. The soils here are very rich reddish-brown with flint and limestone debris called "chaillots", except at the very top of the slope, just below the hard limestone cap there is limestone debris mainly planted with Chardonnay.

The style of the red wines is quite dark in colour with shades varying from deep ruby, crimson to garnet. While the wines are young the aromas remind of small forest fruit like raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrant and blackberry. With time, they intensify and evolve into peony and jasmine, preserved fruits, pistachio, prune, leather, truffle, cinnamon and mushroom. Overall they are full-bodied, robust yet refined. The white wines from Corton are rare and have a unique style, usually with pale gold colour and green highlights, as it ages, the colour turns towards yellow or amber. Often they have delicate aromas with buttery notes of baked apple, citrus fruits, pineapple, lime, bracken, juniper, cinnamon and flint. When mature, they reveal more leathery and truffle notes. Corton-Charlemagne is an extraordinary expression of what the Chardonnay grape variety is capable. It possesses richness, power, concentration, distinction and balance, rarely is possible such a perfect synthesis between grape variety and terroir.
