Languedoc-Roussillon

The Languedoc-Roussillon wine region is one of the biggest and most diverse from all, situated in the south of France on the Mediterranian sea and stretching to the Spanish border. Probably, one-fourth of the French wine is produced here, making the region the biggest in the country. The climate is Mediterranean with some parts of Roussillon lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Geography and culturally the region can be separated into two parts. Languedoc is French in style and belongs to the country since the 13th century and Roussillon was under Spanish occupation in the 17th century and have clear connections to the Spanish and Catalan culture. Principal grapes for the red and rosé wines in the region are Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan and the main whites are Clairette, Bourboulenc, Piquepoul, Roussanne, Marsanne, Rolle and Viognier. Within this geographical area, there are 36 controlled appellations and some of the best are La Clape, Pic Saint-Loup, Faugères, Saint-Chinian, Minervois, Limoux, Fitou and Corbières. In Roussillon are Collioure, Maury, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Banyuls and Côtes Catalanes. Faugères is one of Languedoc's most successful appellations for white and red wines with rustical and easy-drinking style. Pic Saint-Loup is the best known for the excellent and powerful Syrah. Saint-Chinian with its big and refined reds made from Syrah and Grenache grapes. Limoux is a historical appellation for sparkling wine and makes outstanding examples with the rare Mauzac grape with some Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Maury and Banyuls are two extraordinary appellations for fortified sweet wines called vins-doux-naturels made with predominantly Grenache grape. La Clape is very respected for its reds from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Collioure is tiny appellation near Perpignan for well-recognised reds from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and the whites made with Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris which are one of the most complex and powerful in France. The region diversity is unbelievable as well as the value for money it offers.
